Why Cultivating Joy Matters
It must be the topic of the season in my professional coaching life, but cultivating joy is one of the most talked about things which is coming up. Rising the surface.
So many of us have our ‘to-do lists’ planned, we have our systems down, we may even have everything time-blocked down to the minute. But we are still feeling like we are hustling.
We are burnt-out. Our employees and teams are burnt-out. We feel like we have tapped out in our personal and professional lives. When I hear my clients, my friends, my team and even myself swinging between hustle and flatline rest — I come back to this simple question:
Are you cultivating joy in your life?
It’s normally crickets. I mean dead pan silence. I may get ‘yeah my life feels good right now’. But there is no answer to the question that is truly aligned, truly theirs, a deep affection as to what lights up their lives, or my life for that matter.
When we don’t enable, empower or align with what brings us joy, we are missing the crucial aspect and token of sustainability, growth and fulfilment in our lives and businesses. As my coach Quinn Curtis said “we become monotone”. We do. We become totally monotone in our day to day, in our business, in our branding, in every aspect. We lose passion, get frustrated, and want to try something else to mask the fact, that really we have no idea what brings us joy.
I don’t know why there is such a resistance to the cultivation of joy. Perhaps in business we are shown that ‘running on adrenaline’ is how to create amazing growth, connections and expansion. Part of that is true, but only if it’s counterbalanced with authentic alignment, rest and joy-filled activities. So often it is not.
We glamorise and often idolise people who are the ‘token of growth’. I have never been to a training, ever, where anyone has spoken on or discussed the importance of cultivating joy in one’s personal and professional life. I have been to many trainings talking about the ‘next best way to grow your business’ and haphazardly discussing rest as some sort of dreamy thing that we ‘should be doing’ but no one actually models it.
I truly believe that the moment you decide to take on a life of aligned joy, you will see everything that you’ve been hustling towards, ease. You will feel your unsustainable adrenaline levels decrease. You will feel in flow, aligned and alive in both your life and business.
I do feel like this is the magic piece to the balance that we are so often craving and the inspiration to continue pursuing what we feel called to do in life.
